San Juan de Ortega to Burgos

Today was our earliest start yet - 7 a.m.  Because the place where we stayed was so small (its literal translatin is St. John of the Nettle, so you know the most obvious plant that grows here, meaning woodsy pit stops are to be carefully negotiated and preferably avoided), we were given breakfast in a bag following our very simple omelette dinner yesterday evening.

It was quite cool at this elevation and we used our gloves for the first time.  We stopped twice for coffee along the way, and while I wish I could send my usual complement of photos today, I'm afraid a number of them turned out blurry, and below is all that turned out...

The second photo from the bottom is a prayer labyrinth we discovered at the highest point of today's walk.  From here we made our way into the city of Burgos, and the 10 kms we walked past the airport and through the industrial section of Burgos - a city of almost 200,000 - was easily the least attractive part of our Camino so far.  Nothing worthy of a picture!!

We got to the old part of Burgos around 2:30, and were glad to arrive at our hotel.  We look forward to a rest day tomorrow and plan to explore the most famous site in this city, the 13th century Catedral de Santa Maria, the second largest cathedral in Spain (the largest is in Seville).  Here are a couple of initial pics, along with a view of a side street that seemed interesting...

We are off to dinner, and wish you all a restful Sunday as your day begins while ours ends.

Distance today: 25.6 kms
Time on the road: 7:25 (2 coffee breaks and picnic lunch!)
Total distance to date: 289.9 kms
 Walking days remaining: 23
